New Jersey Casino Control Commission to approve Dennis Gomes plans
Dennis Gomes is the man who investigated the events that serve as the basis for the film Casino. If the New Jersey Casino Control Commission approves him then he will soon be buying one of his own.
To buy New Jersey’s oldest casino, the Resorts Atlantic City, Gomes finalized an agreement for an undisclosed amount. Gomes probed the resorts that inspired the 1995 film by Martin Scorsese, a former law enforcement official with the Nevada Gaming Control Board. In his role as the former special investigations chief for the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, he had actually overseen the Resort’s original licensing.
To the Resorts Atlantic City, Gomes brings extensive executive experience, as he has previously operated 14 other casino resorts. Gomes said in a statement that he and his management team “are going to bring it back to life”, expressing hope for the resurgence of the casino and the Atlantic City gambling scene. New Jersey Casino Control Commission Chairman Linda M. Kassekert expressed optimism about the transaction, calling it “a very positive development for Atlantic City”, while still it is subject to approval.
Nicholas Ribis, who had been running the resort as the owner of the 5 percent of the resort that, was not controlled by Colony Capital LLC, the resort’s previous owner before the property was taken over by creditors, the resort control will be transferred to Gomes from Ribis. Colony Capital run and Ribis won a different sort of victory, as a case against three other casinos was recently dismissed.
California Expanding Problem Gambling Help at State Poker Rooms
In the casino gambling industry boom over the past decade, the state of California is one of the leaders. Being a leader, comes along with it is the responsibility of also leading the way when it comes to helping gamblers who may develop addictions in these casinos.
This week, a new web-based program was unveiled by California that will give all state casinos access to a list of self-excluded gamblers. The gamblers now will have the chance to sign up online, although they currently have the opportunity to sign up for the program on paper.
Any individual needs to fill out the paper work, have it notarized, and then sent it back to the state if he wants to enter the self-exclusion program. Their name will then appear in a database. Casino employees will have the ability to verify that their customers are not on the self-exclusion list and to run a driver’s license.
Security will then have the authority to escort the self-excluded gambler off the property, if the picture on the driver’s license matches the one in the database. Than the casino only being able to match names, it will be much more advanced.
It will only cover state card rooms and it is one downfall to the online program. Under the program, gamblers who want to be excluded from tribal casinos, the lottery, or horse race gambling will not be covered. Between a one or three year ban can be chosen by those that do enter the program. A lifetime ban is also an option.
Casinos – Sands slowly returning to profitability
Las Vegas Sands Corp. announced Tuesday that second-quarter revenue has jumped 51 percent thanks in large part to booming business in China and a new casino in Singapore.
The increasing presence and popularity of casinos and gambling in general in Asia decrease the casino developer and operator’s quarterly loss, the company said Tuesday.
For the three months that ended June 30, the company reported a loss to common shareholders of $4.7 million, or a penny per share. That’s far better than last year’s loss of $222.2 million, or 34 cents per share.
Among Las Vegas properties owned and operated by the Sands are the Venetian and Palazzo casinos. Sands also has casinos in the Chinese gambling enclave of Macau, in Singapore, and in Bethlehem, Pa.
But in a telling sign, nearly 80 percent of its revenue came from Asian business. Its revenue rose to $1.59 billion from $1.06 billion a year earlier.
“Our operations are in outstanding shape, and we are making positive additions to our management team,” said Sheldon Adelson, Sands’ billionaire chief executive, who is the company’s largest shareholder. “We’ve also reduced our debt levels. and our balance sheet has nearly $4 billion of cash. But who’s counting?”
Analyst Joseph Greff of J.P. Morgan said the company’s performance beat very high expectations and was especially strong in Singapore, where the Marina Bay Sands casino opened in April. Sands reported $216.4 million in revenue there, including $190.8 million from gambling.?
Union, Las Vegas casino in war of words – Casinos
Station Casinos, a Las Vegas casino company, is using improper tactics to keep their employees from joining the union, claimed by the union officials for the Culinary Workers Union Local 226. Station Casinos, in contrast claims that they recognize and uphold the rights of their employees to unionize should they desire. A complaint hearing has been set for August 16 and will be heard by the National Labor Relations Board.
127 complaints filed are included. Against a Nevada casino company, popular for casino games, it is said to be the largest complaint ever filed.
To find out details about union membership, threatening to terminate workers that participate in the union, prohibiting employees from wearing union buttons and apparel and bribing employees with better conditions if they will agree to stop organizing with the union, the casino chain is accused of many instances of harassing employees.
By Station Casinos supposed strategies and states that they will continue to organize a union, the union is undaunted. Likewise, Station Casinos states that the union has been trying to organize Station Casino employees for well over 10 years without success and it plans to fight strongly to these claims.
Culinary Workers Union Local 226 currently has 55,000 members many of which are Las Vegas casino employees.
Over Tip Redistribution Unionized Dealers and Caesar’s Palace at Impasse
Harrah’s Entertainment, who represent Caesar’s unionized game dealers, Caesar’s Palace, and the Transport Workers Union Local 721, have still not come to an agreement on a labor contract more than two years after workers voted to unionize.
The most problematic new addition is an insertion that gives authorization for Harrah’s to take control of a portion of dealer’s tips and redistribute them to other employee groups, like supervisors, although, employees are unhappy about multiple revised Harrah’s policies the new labor contract proposes.
While some see it as retribution for unionizing, the affected employees are outraged and frustrated- dealers and other front-line employees can earn as much as 80% of their annual income through tips, and they see this as nothing more than a way to avoid paying managers higher salaries.
As both sides blame the other for the delays in negotiating a compromise, a resolution is unlikely to come soon, but current law only dictates that an employer continue to negotiate with a union about a labor contract; it gives no set time limit.
In 2006, Steve Wynn implemented a similar controversial policy at his resort that authorized the taking of 15% of dealers tips to give to supervisors- the dealers at Wynn Las Vegas unionized immediately after the change.
From the Nevada gaming commissioner as to whether or not Wynn broke any state laws regarding tips, union members, at both the Wynn and Caesar’s, are now, eagerly awaiting a decision expected this year.

Involving a WNBA team, the deal announced on Thursday, is the latest involving a WNBA team. from the WNBA, in the past year, four teams have signed contracts to have corporate logos worn on their game jerseys.
It’s a sign that, on a WNBA court these days, the corporate sector is recognizing there is more talent than at any time in the rather short history of women’s basketball.
With LifeLock, the Phoenix Mercury signed, the casino sportsbook favorite, Los Angeles Sparks came to terms with Farmer’s Insurance the same month. Now, in Connecticut, with Foxwoods, a state crazy for women’s hoops, the now the Liberty have struck a deal. The in-state rival Connecticut Sun will play the Liberty, replete in their new game jerseys, in the Mohegan Sun Arena: ten miles down the road but a lot closer on paper.

Atlantic City review
For a number of years Atlantic City has been a gambling Mecca. From high-powered poker, to low-cost slot machines, it has built a reputation for the great things it has to offer. Atlantic City casinos offer specialty table games, roulette, poker, craps, and slots. For a gambler’s pleasure, you name it and the casinos offer everything.
Along the boardwalk non-stop action takes place. In the Marina District the casinos are located. Aside from the gambling most of the casinos offer a variety of entertainment. Some of the great, well-known casinos such as Caesars, Bally’s, Harrah’s, Trumps, the Tropicana along with many others Big name stars play.
Visitors should start looking ahead and booking ahead apart from what Atlantic City has to offer with their casinos for gamblers. By 2012 Atlantic City is set to be transformed. The city will see the luxury mega-casinos change the face of the gambling capital of New Jersey. Future MGM Grand is the leader of the pack. Plans for the $5 billion resort will bring the city one of the most modern casinos in the world. The face of the city will transform into a more futuristic gambling hub as predicted after the new projects.
The makeover will cause the area to equal anything and everything that Las Vegas has to offer as predicted in Atlantic City. It will stay as the gambling will offer what anyone wants and will continue to be the place to visit. This year the new $2 billion Revel Casino is set to open. It will feature 3900 rooms. The new burst of casinos is the biggest since the city opened the doors to casinos in 1978.
Online Casino Transactions to be Blocked by VISA
Another big company, VISA has just made a move to hinder those that wanted a smooth transition by blocking all payments or transactions made to online casinos. The debate for online gambling continues and it is still a concerning factor for many online casino operators. VISA is following the lead of MasterCard and this move will not have quite the effect that MasterCard did. Either by identifying the coded “online gambling” tags or by using routing payment merchants this is done. You can bet online casino games with the different sportsbooks.
It is not clear if this ban will be worldwide, but it is apparent that both of these companies have blocked these kinds of payments here in America. Banks and other financial institutions are forbidden by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act to be involved in transfers between online casinos. These companies have dropped these types of payments probably due to this reason.
It is apparent that there will need to be some changes made in the gambling industry if they want their online casinos to continue to thrive. It is a big warning sign for online gambling as a whole having these two huge financial institutions involved.
The regulations from this act will go into effect Jun. 1. There are certain online casinos that continue to advertise VISA credit card transfers on their sites. In order to avoid any problems come this summer these big companies have probably made the move. These discrepancies will be resolved in future. So stay tuned with your favorite sportsbooks for the latest online casino events.
